I have almost finished the total restoration of my October 1936 flying squirrel. The tank is now painted black & ready for coach lining Brian Marshall has told me that he thinks that pictures of this model appeared in Yowl. does anybody know when this happened, or can anyone tell me :- what colour the lines should be & how wide, as well as the side panels having a line should there be a diamond shaped line on the top. if so how big should it be & should there be a Scott limit tranfer inside the diamod It’s been along 14 months & I’m really looking forward to my first ride out. hope that someone can help me

Go to the home page on this web site and at the bottom you will see a link to the Scott Technicalities. Go to chapter 10 which is about paint finishes and you may well find the answer there. If not , get back to me and I’ll see what info I can find in the library.

Thanks for your help. the only suprise was that it seems that the lines should be gold! I think that the mention of an article on diamonds that Brian refered to is also mentioned in Technicalities as “Scott Diamonds” Feb 84. Do we go back so far with our records of Yowl. Just to muddy the water a bit more, A bit further along in “Technicalities” it refers to:- diamonds a reply, v14/3 april1985 where a 1936 FS was imported to Australia with purple panels.
I like the idea of gold lies but would hate to put them under several coats of laquer only for some smart rr to tell me that I got it wrong.

Gold lines and purple panels are correct for 1936.
I have a 1936-model and the tank is painted according to the information in Scott Technicalities page 10.1.03 – 08. Purple broad diamond, 9″ wide/ 5″ high, with one 1/16″ gold line dividing diamond from the black tank. Side panels purple with same 1/16″ gold lining around. Gold should be real gold, not pseudo gold (bronze).

Just to cloud the issue a little more:- I had a look at the catalogues in the library, no 1936, but the 1935 model had a black tank with purple panels – no mention of a diamond on the top and no mention of coloured lining.
The 1937 model had a choice of a black tank with white lining or a black tank with purple panels – no mention of a diamond or the colour of any lining.
In my garage , I have a mid thirties tank, black with purple side panels and white lining but no diamond on top. Also I have a Clubmans Special tank, black with purple panels and diamond, all with white lining.
You pays your money and takes your choice it seems!

I bet Scotts would put any colour you wanted on your tank. When the smart rrs come along just tell them it was a special order… Then ask them where they have parked theirs. Its usually in their garage or non existant. Problem solved!
