Hi
New member rebuilding a 1950 “Flyer”fitting new seals to forks ,but because of the state of lower cowl seal and scraper cannot work out the correct sequence for reassembly,have;1brass scraper,1lipped seal,1plain rubber ring per leg, any help much appreciated,to be followed by many more questions.

Hi Dave,
I assume the seals you have are similar to the sets from Grove classics that I have recently fitted to several Dowty forks. The double lipped seal fits in a groove machined in the inside of the cowl. The last set I repaired had no cowl at all, it having been removed in order to fit springs which have since been removed. The thin ring does not seem to have a place unless it is for a different version. I have a hone for the tubes if you need it.

I purchased the seals from the club spares,my cowls do not have annular groves but about 22mm from top edge of cowl there is a series of 6 dot punch nibs about .5mm deep on the inside!could this be to support the brass ring and the lip seal sits on this?,then were dose the plan rubber ring go.
Still no luck att. pictures any one advise on how to do it.

My forks ( 1949 ) have the thin brass ring fixed in place ( ? brazed ) It locates and retains the dust seal. It sound as if your rings may have been detached – accidentally or possibly deliberately – and then someone has tried to hold them in with centre punching. If so, then it would be a nasty bodge. Better to make up new rings if necessary and braze or silver solder into the cowls.

There is no evidence on the cowls or rings of any previous brazing/solder,but its still a good idea and will silver solder at work tomorrow.
