And another thing….

Having heavy-handedly bent the aluminium strip running around the bottom of my 2 speeder’s tank at the weekend (in an honest attempt to force it into the groove ) can anyone :

1. suggest a sorce for the relevant 1/4 inch aluminium strip, and
2. explain how the strip should be fastened and tightened at the rear of the tank?

On my tanks, there are two methods of fixing the strips. One is the same as in Erik’s picture, and the other has the ends of the strips bent double and then bent at right angles and fastened with 4BA nuts and bolts.
I was looking for a source of strip for a tank that I am refurbishing. I ended up buying some 1mm thick, 20mm x 20mm aluminium angle from my local hardware/builders merchant. I think that it is used as an edging strip. I mounted a 1mm thick metal cutting disk in my pillar drill and with the table and disk set to give a cut at 1/4″ from the top of one edge of the angle strip, slid the angle strip across the table and got my 1/4″ strip. The angle strip comes in 8ft lengths so you will have plenty to play with.

Next time you see a gang working up the National Grid electricity pylons (Not the painting crews!), overhauling the cables, insulators, etc., you need to do a bit of scrounging…..They use the 1/4″ aluminium strip to bind around the cables where they pass over the insulators, to stop the cables fraying with the constant thermal expansion/contraction and wind movement. Good scrounging

Hi.
Further to my previous posting, Roy Lambert (Midlands Section) used to supply the aluminium strip, but it is several years since I had any from him, when I was restoring the Sprint Special that appears on the Home Page, and I don’t know if he may still have some available. Worth a phone call though.
