I’m new to the club and have been watching various entries on this forum. The one of most interest was back in March, titled “1929 3 speed”. Relating to a bike for sale on the Cotswold Classics web site. I registered an interest with Richard Tann who suggested I looked at this forum. I did, and although there was nothing there that I wasn’t already concerned about, it did however give me plenty of ammunition to beat the price down (I didn’t mention anything about the club or the forum).
The bike did run incredibly quietly and plenty of drips from both beaks in the pump. It also had an MOT until November; I suspect we all know MOT test stations like that. Besides being a general mess the big issue was water leaks from the engine.

I managed to reduce the price to a far more sensible level and then did a very good deal with an old bantam which stood me at £150. So all in all I think I got a shabby non standard bike for a reasonable price and a good starting point. Originality can come later.

The reg number HW6755 appears to be an original, no mention in the V5C of “non transferable”. Reg date 23-08-1929. Although the engine is late 27 and the frame later than 29, must have had a blow up and crash in 82 years.

The top end of the engine is off and the reason for the leaks is now quite obvious and not serious. The centre exhaust stud was stripped and broken through the water jacket. Re tapped and a new stud made. The drain plug was also stripped, so again re tapped and a new plug made. The spark plug ferrules were also badly corroded so new ones (14mm) on the way from Graham Moag and the water cover gaskets etc.

The bottom end is polished and seems fine, no play in the mains or big ends. The bores are +060 (82 years old) with permissible wear. So as soon as I receive the ferrules and put the top end back on, it’s down the road for a test. Because it has an MOT I put it on my insurance (£20 admin fee) and taxed it for June 1st.

Does anyone know anything of HW6755 prior to Cotswolds? The last owner who acquired the bike on 27th August 2009 was Philip Perrett from Bristol. The V5C states number of former keepers as 4. I don’t hold much hope of that being true.

Hi Phil,

HW is one of the registration marks for Bristol and the series started in July 1927. Try contacting Bristol Records Office and see if they have anything. Normally this will at the very least give you where the reg number was allocated but in some instances will give you a great deal more than you bargained for like a first owner….

Originally a Bristol reg and the last owner was a Bristol man, so looking promising. Would be nice if the reg was original. Maybe the only thing that is.

Hi Phil,

The records will tell you though it is not in any age related series. The only one I have listed under the Bristol marks is reverse numbers YHT which was used in September 1975 for re-registrations. it is however possible that the number on your bike was issued around the same time as it was a spare either unissued or void number. If you ‘stole’ a registration number in the 70’s you would only get something that they had floating around. If you asked for something more appropriate you might get lucky with a registration number of the right age.

You would be surprised how many unused local registration numbers were used for re-registrations!

Hi Phil,

When I read this the name Phil Perret rang a bell. I used to live in Bristol 15 years ago and I’m sure Phil was active in the two stroke scene. In fact he still must be as I sold some Scott bits to him a year or so ago. If you PM me your contact details I can call Phil and put you both in touch if you wish.
