You cannot help to have heard of the gallant exploits of 99 -year old Captain Tom Moore who has (to the time of this post ) raised over £6 million for NHS charities by walking around his garden. It appears that Tom was a Scott rider in his youth as disclosed in the photograph below which was posted on his Just Giving page. I am unsure whether Tom was ever a member of the Club but I trying to find any references to Tom in back -copies of the Club magazine. In the meantime, Tom’s singular effort seems to me to be typically of a Scott owner and is in aid of a worthy cause which members might consider supporting .
I know I should get out more, but if you look up “The Third Scott Selection” page 66, there is a picture of the sister bike to the one Tom is riding. The caption reads “Registration DN3613 issued by York County Borough Council in late 1920 but photograph taken later because of the fitment of the oil tank”
I have received a number of emails via this site suggesting that it would be a great gesture ( and good publicity for the Club) to get Captain Tom Moore back on a Scott for his 100th birthday. Whist I am sure that we could find a suitable bike, I am a little at a loss as to how it could be arranged for the bike to get to Tom through the current lockdown rules. If anyone has any ideas I would be pleased to hear from them. I understand that Tom lives in Marston, Bedfordshire so a local member might be better able to oblige.
The current lockdown rules don’t seem to apply to Captain Tom – army lads, photographers etc….
The biggest problem is going to be getting in touch with him as half the Uk seems to want to talk to him. We tried to get in touch re his Scott but just got a generic email back.

The picture of Capt.Moore shows him on a circa 1920 model which has been updated.A later Scott front brake is fitted,& a non Scott rear hub brake with sidecar? sprocket .I judge his ag e in the photo as about 40? which probably puts the date to about 1960?,& was probably taken at a local carnival or run at which he won a prize. It would nice to know where he was living at this time.
Potty.
We have just put in the post a complimentary copy of Yowl to Tom with a short covering letter asking him if we can get in touch to talk about his love for Scotts. Worth a try!

This morning’s Telegraph supplement has an article on Captain Tom who describes himself in the Scott photo as being around 35 which would put the photo at 1950. He says “I’m sitting on a Scott which I rode several times for vintage motorcycle races and local competitions in Yorkshire. You were given a set route and a time in which to do it and you had to keep to it. If you did it properly, you arrived everywhere at the right time. Speed wasn’t the thing, it was timekeeping that was important. My motorcycle was owned by a man called Oliver Lampton. I was lent bicycles by people who knew that I was a possible winner”.
Is Lampton a typo for Langton?
Last night’s ITV programme on him showed a riding number of, I think 186 (possibly 183). It was obviously a big event – Banbury? The only people old enough to remember back to the 50s in Yorkshire are either Dennis Buckle or Maurice Rispin. Is it worth making Tom an honoury member?

Maurice has searched his extensive archive when the story broke but cannot trace him.
He does know that Billy Moore (of U6 fame) was Captain Tom’s uncle.
