Gents. I believe I now have the right copper mesh to make some gauzes for my 21 2 speeder, plugs at the back, and could do with knowing how to fit them and what size I am going to cut them from the sheet I have. Are they folded and then fitted?

Hi Will,

I use gauzes in my 1926 Super. The ones I use are quite fine, I just cut them to the same size as a transfer port gasket then sandwich one between two gaskets with a small amont of sealant. I think I have a gauze top and bottom but can’t remember offhand. They don’t seem to affect performance at the speeds I use and have eliminated spitting.

Having just had a look, I only have gauzes on the LH cylinder. I think it was pure laziness but it cured the spitting.

OK thanks Richard. That seems easy enough. I have a number 6 carb fitted too which I can replace with a smaller 274 carb I got recently. The internals are the same but it seems like it will not be drawing so much air and this might help too.

I fitted top and bottom gauzes to either side and this stopped the spitting. The next thing to do is reduce that to just one either side to increase air flow and see if the spitting still stops.

The main reason for spitting back was written up by Bob Brougham in YOWL Vol 24/6 (Oct 05) page 202,please read it.What happens is that on low compresson engines with a single exhaust port the hot flames from one cyl track into the other cyl and a baffle is needed (see Bobs drawings).I did the mod on one of my engines and it utterly transformed it.
“Rickardo” (yes him of 4 valve fame) wrote about this before W War 1 & said that the exhaust ports of multi cyl 2 strokes must be kept well away from each other.After WW2 Rickardo produced the worlds most powerful aircraft piston engine —-a 2 stroke ! —
but it was too late as we were into the “Jet age” POTTY.

fascinating Glyn, I must try that on my spare motor. Also about drilling the piston, I know it all gets very hot. Thanks for pointing the way, I must read more of the archive.
