Does anyone have a kick start bush retaining strap for a 3 speed gearbox (1947) surplus to requirements. The kick start bush has rotated on mine and the slot for the ratchet to engage in is at the bottom part of the rotation. The part that retains this bush is missing on the strap that I have?

Can’t you build it up with a dollop of weld or braze a bit on? ……………………..
Earlier gearboxes have the kickstart boss held in position by a small dowel that engages into the gearbox end cover, but numpties abuse this by operating the kickstart with the bike on the rear stand, so the pedal goes to the limit and tries to turn the boss, which causes the dowel to tear itself a slot in the end cover. This can be alloy welded, but the best long-term remedy is to go for the later type pedal stop, held in place by two of the end-cover retaining sleeve nuts, and by the central 3/8″ dowel. The stop has a tongue on its bottom edge which engages with a cut-out in the flange of the kickstart boss, and stops it from turning. I believe that Eddie Shermer and Alan Noakes can supply them.
I was hoping that I could find a replacement (least work) but welding a tab on will be quicker than making a new one, the one I have has been fabricated out of stainless steel.
Thanks for your responses.
Steve
Then weld on a tang with a MIG welder
I set about removing the cover today today but couldn’t get the lay shaft to release from the cover, with the layshaft attached to the end cover it won’t pass the selector arms, any ideas?
Steve
Remove the kick start pawl, remove all the bolts.
The cover should move a bit, I then heat up the end cover with a gas torch to make it expand and a sharp, quick pull, the bearing should be free from the end case
Also, make sure you remove the K/Start ratchet by removing the bolt in the centre of the layshaft. Sometimes the ratchet can be quite tight on the square.
Eddie
And sometimes b—-y tight…. 🙂

That’s what I meant , not the pawl in the K/S lever
Thanks guys, all came apart easily with some heat. There wasn’t a gasket should there be one?
Now I am in I can see how simple things are, very robust though.
Steve
No gasket. Use a smear of silicone mastic when reassembling.
