Hi all, I’ve very reluctantly decided to sell my complete set of “The Classic MotorCycle” magazine, every issue from number one in June/July 1981, up to the latest issue. They have been carefully dry-stored, so no rusty staples or mouldy pages. Please see my advert on eBay, item number 142547981747. For collection only. (Nottinghamshire).

I keep meaning to dispose of some/all of my collection of bike mags but it’s a daunting task!
I expect the boys will just put them all in a skip one day, which is fair enough given that the Net has made keeping mags “for reference” a bit of a nonsense.
What! Even the July 1986 edition, which includes Billy’s Old Sprint Special U6 and mentions Mr Marshall himself on Page 42?
Chris.
Yes, that issue is included. Whatever induced my late brother-in-law Doug Wright to write that rubbish I will never know. That bike has no connection whatsoever with Billy Moore. John Hartshorne created it in 1960, buying a bare 1931-1933 Flyer frame from a man called Joe Tite in Leicester. Dave Ward supplied the Webb forks and front wheel, both from a cammy Velo. The rear wheel came from a 1929 Flying Squirrel Tourer, but I don’t know where the tanks, engine, gearbox, etc., came from. John just claimed the U6 registration number, and got it because things were then much more lax. That number was eventually sold, and the bike was re-registered as 988EUT, which it still carries, (in the hands of Martin Heckscher). Doug’s fairy tale didn’t come from John, but John did buy a two-speeder and sidecar in circumstances similar to those related in the article, years before the creation of the pseudo-Sprint Special.

Think you were a little optimistic at that price, but have you tried “www.manualman@blueyonder.co.uk”?
He bought a load of old Blue and Green ‘Uns off me some years back for what I considered to be a good price.
Pricing was difficult, and I looked at what single copies of the mag are selling for on Fleabay, and it is typically about £2.00 plus postage. I have all 430 (approx.) copies, and if you multiply that by £2 it comes to around £860 worth of stock for somebody, so I thought that a starting price of £150 was reasonable…
Our section of the VMCC have 2 bring and buy sales every year and a lot of these mags turn up but do not sell, it will be interesting to see if yours find a buyer. Good luck anyway.
Earlier this year I used Ebay to sell my father’s collection of 29 years of The Classic Motorcycle, all in as new condition in the official binders, and achieved the grand sum of £35!
