Hi, I don’t know if you saw this original paint fuel tank for 1927/28 Flying Squirrel, in case it’s someone from the forum, I think it would be great to make a drawing and a position of the side panels and top diamond? I was making my shape out of many photographs and catalogue pictures, but I think this could help to other people (and if I’m not gonna be lazy, to me when I will remake it 🙂 And some more detailed pictures would be also perfect. I think the shape is different than the one in Scott technicalities (which seems to be for 29/30 white side panels).

It is a 1928 Flying Squirrel tank, the only year that the short-stroke Flyer engine had cylinder-wall oiling, with the cable-operated plunger pump under the tank, which reappeared on the 1929 TT Replica, with the flared sides to the tank. Subsequent years TT Reps also had this feature.

In England the model for next year would be seen at the big London exhibition in the Autumn before the New Year, and so yes, you could buy a 1928 model in very late 1927. At the end of 1928 you could buy the latest 1929 TT Replica Model, and so on. The shows were held at Earls Court and Olympia, both big exhibition halls.

The generally accepted position/shapes for Flyer tank panels was described by Bill Hynds in 1984 and is covered in Technicalities 10.1.3 to 10.1.5.
In 1927 and 28 the side transfers should be the Flying Squirrel (or flat rat as Glynn Chambers describes it) They are available from me as part of the club’s badge/regalia scheme.

Or “Squashed Skunk”, as I call ’em ! The first version of the transfer, on the 1926 Super Squirrel based Flying Squirrel, has a rectangular ‘sunburst’ panel behind it, not present on the duplex-frame long wheelbase Flyers of 1927 and 1929. I have a handed pair of the original varnish-fix Harold Peace (HEPACO) ones, if a purist out there needs them. Make me an offer…
