I have refitted the KS spring quite a few times during the last two years. I never use anything else than my hands. So no piece of string as the book says.
This is how I do it. Fit the two speed gear in the frame. You are right that the anchor point is then in the wrong position. I now simply rotate the rotating part of the drum clockwise (so against the tension of the spring). The spring should wind itself up during the process. I then hold the drum steady with the bolt at about 12 o’clock and slide over the hole in the end of the kickstarter chain. Screw nut on and ready. It is a bit fiddly process but it works.
I know it seems very easy and in fact it is. So if this does not work I would almost asume that there must be something else wrong….
