I believe that Jack was 86 years old. He had suffered with a severe neck/spinal problem for a long time, which prevented him from doing anything with his Scott activities. He once told me about the time when he worked for Frank Ford Ltd., in Halifax, makers of stainless steel cooking ranges for fish and chip shops, and he told me that they were soldered together. I asked why they weren’t welded, and he laughed, saying that the ranges would occasionally catch fire if left unattended on a high heat, and the soldered joints would fall apart. Frank Ford could then sell them a new range….
