Which part of it is unreliable , the dynamo or the magneto ?
The dynamo can be made to be used on 6 or 12 volts with a solid state regulator.
some modern electronic ignition conversions only draw a small current , so in the event of a charging failure you should be able to do many miles before the battery is discharged
