I suggest that rather than ordinary mild steel you should use the “rebar” stuff used for reinforcing concrete structures as it is more malleable than mild steel. I don’t know the metallurgy involved but it should be easy to cadge some offcuts from the nearest building site, as a lot gets thrown away.
