When I restored my Birmingham Scott, because of the inaccuacy of positioning the bobbins welded to the frame, not only had all the holes in the crankcase been drilled out to 3/4″ to take the three 5/8″ through-bolts, but the front ones had been further filed out oval.
Remember – you always work to a tenth of a thou by definition, as everything you do can simply be measured that accurately – even chopping wood – but not necessarily the correct tenth of a thou!!
