Richard, I did say that I would let you know what I found. The sliding dog had rusted onto the mainshaft as you thought and the sliding fork to spindle to spindle bushes were all corroded together. Quite surprising how much corrosion there was, as the mainshaft ball bearing was full of rust and solid and the layshaft ball bearing badly corroded. To cap it all, the layshaft appears to be the seemingly less popular solid ‘wide vintage’ variety. Since also found that the magdyno is 16 years older than the bike – the joys of owning Scotts!
Anyway, thanks for your original advice. Will start looking for a built up layshaft with gears now.
