Years ago,as a callow youth, with little in the way of tools, I would make things like that using the chuck of my Dad’s electric drill as my ‘lathe’, holding a hand file onto the brass rod to get it down to the right diameter, and my brass rod would be salvaged from all the old 15 amp round-pin plugs that were being thrown away in their thousands as people’s houses were being rewired and changed to the flat-pin type 13 amp plugs. If I see any of those old round-pin plugs at car boot sales I still grab them for a few pence, and strip out the brass parts, and throw away the Bakelite bits. Still the cheapest source of brass suitable for making control cable nipples, electrical connectors, and stuff like that. I love recycling stuff like that !
