Remember 15th March1914. No-one can have personal memory of the actual day but we all can be aware of the history of that date. Articles, pictures and a book have been published detailing the story of the Scott Trial and emphasising the 15th March 1914 – the inaugural running of what grew into the phenomenon which is the world-famous Scott Trial.
One can only be in awe of the skill and determination of those 14 competitors in the first event, navigating their way round the course and riding what, to modern eyes, were totally unsuitable machines over unforgiving terrain. Similarly, Alfred Scott’s vision and organisation of the first trial are to be admired even if he did see it as an opportunity for testing the production bikes.
The event and the date will be featured in Yowl and a Scott-motorcycle-related display at the 2014 trial is planned, but, in the meantime, this picture may help keep the incredible first trial in mind as the centenary date approaches. I do not know the venue or date of the photo (I leave that to the experts) but it certainly evokes the atmosphere and courageous spirit of the first Scott Trial.
