I have recently acquired the remains of a 1926 2-speed Super Squirrel which included the remnants of an oiling system which I cannot recognise. The oil tank has three outlets – the usual hand pump for the 2-speed gear, an on/off tap and a single, adjustable drip-feed. The main bearings in the engine are fed by one pipe which splits into two. Please see the attached photographs.
Is the tap a provision for chain oiling or is it supposed to be the feed to an absent oil pump (Best and Lloyd or Pilgrim?)?
Or is the drip feed a chain oiler or a single dripper supply to the engine through the single supply pipe? The adjustment is lost each time the engine is stopped as the only way to stop the oil flow is by turning the adjustment right down.

Hello Jem, It appears to be something cobbled together by a previous owner, so one can only guess at how it was all plumbed in, and why. Late 1926 would have seen the appearance of the Best and Lloyd Mark 2 oil pump, which was single outlet to a ‘splitter’ clamped onto the top downtube, basically just a ‘Y-piece’, with two pipes leading to the oil connection elbows on top of each main bearing housing. So your pipe connecting over the flywheel is definitely not original, and might even be part of a petroil conversion, however these normally incorporate one-way valves, which you don’t seem to have…. ? If it is a petroil conversion, the sight glass dripper may well be an extra oil feed, intended to keep the glands and main bearings happy, with the plunger hand pump just feeding the two-speed gear. Jenks and Swabey anybody ?

Hello mate my 29 2 speeder I had fitted with a pair of Best and Loyd drippers one each to the crankcase feeds with a tap and pipe to the gear turn on tap for afew seconds every now and then .the drippers I removed the discs from . also 50/ 1 saab oil in the fuel .the bike has run on this system since 1970 with no probs ( now on stihl 2/ oil in fuel ) Regards D F.

Unfortunately, my local Best and Lloyd drippers shop closed down in the recession (I mean the one in the early 1930s), so my plan is to put a blanking plug in the tank in place of the single dripper and to connect the on/off tap to a Pilrim pump converted to drippers which I have left over from changing my 1939 Flyer to a reduction-gear-driven pump. If I mount the Pilgrim near to the magneto sprocket it should not look too much out of place and will serve a purpose until I can find something more in keeping with the age of the bike.

Jem, I believe that Best and Lloyd are still in business !!! Sadly making brass light fittings and not oil drippers. A search of old shelves and store rooms would be nice though. You never know what you might find. I wonder how many optimists have tried phoning them to ask about oil drippers ?
