Hi,
As a new Scott owner I would appreciate any advice from the experts.
I bought a beautifully restored Flying Squirrel a few months ago, which had only done 10 miles since rebuilt, so I am following the previous owners advise on fuel / oil mix and she runs well apart from:
1. It’s almost impossible to select and keep her in 3rd gear under any load. When I try adjusting the hand gear linkage up or down, it makes no difference, but heavy crunching and she fails to get into and stay in 3rd gear – any suggestions
2. When warm, the clutch doesn’t want to fully disengage, despite the clutch cable being at maximum tension. Could that just be poor clutch springs
3. Whilst recognising that during the running in period, the plugs will get very oiled up, she often fails to re-start and is there better plugs than the existing NGK AB6’s that I should be using?
4. For the mixture setting, roughly how far out should the adjusting screw be undone from the carb body. It’s hard with all the oil deposits to determine if the mixture is correct.
5. Is it normal to get coolant leakage around the spark plugs
Thank you in advance.

Neil, if you have a look in Scott Technicalities there is an article on how to set up the gear lever – that may be a starting point. I would be tempted to whip off the clutch and check it, something is not quite right. It may also contribute to the 3rd gear issue. Violent should not be leaking around the plugs. I think there is plenty of info + much wiser folks than myself that may have a better idea. There is a lot in technicalities and also the back issues of Yowel. I’m in Dublin, so wanted to take the opportunity to say hi, Doug
Hi Neil, welcome to the club. If your clutch is original it works on a quick thread which can wear and reduce the lift. Have you got a copy of “The book of the Scott”? It’s useful. I’m sure someone more knowledgeable than me will chip in sooner or later. If it is the quick thread there are mods which work better.
I think you should have a blind head motor with a water dome not a detachable head (I’m no 3-speed expert). The dome is secured by 2 rings around the plug holes which screw down. They are prone to leakage. If it doesn’t settle down with use you may need to replace the gaskets and check that the dome isn’t warped.
best of luck, persevere!
Hello Richard and Doug,
Many thanks for your very helpful advice and I’ll get reading !!
One other quick question, the engine chain is very tight, no slack at all. Is this correct, as I assume some slack is normal ??
Yes, an inch or two, check it in various positions as they wear unevenly
