Hallo, I’m just preparing all materials to start to work on my TT replica. I have a question, if they used 21″ both wheels, or 21″ front and 20″ rear? Thanks, Martin

Dear Dave, thanks a lot. There are 26×3 for both. Am I right to recount this to 3.00 x 20″? Just to be sure if this is correct recounting.

Yes, but you may find it difficult to find that size these days. Front tyres are not a problem but road going rear tyres are difficult to find. I’ve had to resort to buying second hand 20” x 3.00” rear tyres for my bike. I think 20” x 3.50” are available but then you lose that spindly look that the thinner tyre gives you.

I could find Ensign Universal 3.00 x 20″. Avon 3,50 x 21 is not that often usual as well. Anyway, looks like Ensign could be the right option. As I know, some people use 19″ instead of 20, but I also think the 3 x 20″ looks just perfect on the bike and has correct late 20″s light look.

I was thinking if it would be easier to find 3.00 x 21″ which could be better option than 19″, but as I can see, it’s similar problem as with 3.oo x 20″. There could be option to use Avon AM26 road rider MkII, but I don’t like it on vintage period bike. So Ensign 3 x 20″ rear will be perfect, with speedmaster at front.

Hi Martin,

It is perhaps worth noting that in both the 1929 & 1930 catalogues, amongst the list of extras is the option of 26 x 3.25 (3.25 x 19 in “modern” tyre sizing) in place of the standard 26 x 3.00 (3.00 x 20). This would have cost you an extra 10 shillings.

Hi Martin,

yes, I know. I still prefer 20″, fits more to the character of the bike. And I can imagine I would be exactly kind of the person, who would sega 10 shillings by keeping standard wheels. Yes, it’s paradox, as now I have to buy new rims, I have many 19″ rims, but only one 20″ which is drilled for 36 spokes. I got this one with Velocette KSS MkI front wheel. Weird, as MkI used 19″ or 21″… 🙂
