Hi all, I am playing with one of these and find it has two sizes of ball bearings: 1/4″ for the thrust bearings and 7mm approx for the others. Is this right? The book seems to say 1/4″ throughout. And what type of bearing, chrome or stainless?

Well, it would not have been stainless back in the day, but I see no reason why not,
as for size 7mm could be 9/32 which equates to 7.14mm

Basic dynamic load rating of stainless bearings is reckoned to be 25% lower than their chrome steel counterparts.

Hardly likely, is it?
I rather doubt Shipley back then had even heard of a “7mm approx.” bearing balls, and when the cheaply available 1/4″ were used elsewhere on the machine.

Interesting fact about the load capacity of stainless balls. Thank you, I’ll add that to my unreliable memory bank 🙂

9/32 it was, 7.14mm, chrome balls ordered. Thrust bearings 1/4 and bracelet ones 3/16. Thanks for your comments.

BTW I think 1/4″ rollers are too big for the thrust lever so I shall experiment with smaller dia ones to get over the shoulder and nicely into the taper, per the article in “Technicalities”.

What a genius he was.
