I have now put a few miles on my scott and i am really pleased,just a couple of niggles.The main one being that when i go in to 2nd gear,sometimes i get a noise almost like a screeching/grating which increases in intensity the further i push it into gear.The noise is not severe,but is worthy of note.Any ideas??? The gears will hold in ok.

How are you lubricating the two-speed gear? and what with? and how often?

It sounds as if it is running metal-to metal without the essential film of oil on the clutches.

Does it get enough oil through to the drums? And what oil do you use?

For the two speed gear? That should be a straight 30 or 40 in my opinion.
Much thicker oil, better suited for lubricating the gear I think.
Mineral 2T is good for mixing in the tank.

But oil is one of those things everybody has his own opinion on….

so your saying my engine should be running on straight 30 also???
The gear oiler plunger is part of the same tank that feeds the pilgrim pump. 😕 So what the engine runs on the gears must also….

I agree with Erik. I use non detergent 30 oil in the tank ( for 2 sp gear and engine) and a small amount of 2 stroke oil in the petrol. If you get a screeching noise as you engage 2nd gear, your shaft is probably moving sideways. There are spacer washers inside the gear. A good time to take a look inside.

I have ben using Silkolene Comp 2 in my 2 Speed Sports Squirrel for the last 3 years. It supplies the engine and the 2 Speed Gear. I have not found any problems with it in the gear, it makes the gear smoother and less prone to snatch. I give it about 1/2 a pumpfull every 25 miles. Synthetic oils do seem to lubricate better than mineral oils as well as burn cleaner.

Thanks for the advice regarding the oil 😀 …..The screech from the gear has only developed after i have covered about 150 miles 🙄 ….What is the proceedure for checking the shaft and shims in the gear??? 😕 Thanks Adrian

I swapped over to monograde 40 and everything sees fine now on the lube front. 😀

it does say in the scott driving guide 30 grade oil

40 grade oil, the cure for many worn gearbox ills…. I use castrol R40 in the tank 25:1 with petrol, into the Pilgrim, and also for 3 speed gearbox oil. IMHO modern synth oils are made for caged bearings and silicone alloy pistons, mainly in plated bores, running much closer clearances and tolerances than old worn Scotts. As someone above said though, ask a million people and get a million different answers 😯

I don’t think the box is worn, i think it’s more that i have been under lubricating to prevent oil stains on those lovely shiny bits. 😆
