bearing question

Hi, after some time I continue at my 1923 Velocette model B and I need some bearings for the bike and I would like to ask if someone knows where to get them. I need new steering head cups, outside diameter 41 mm, inside diameter 27,3 mm, balls 4,7 mm.
And cups & cones for the front webb hub, OD of the cup is 36,8 mm, ID 31,7 mm, cones for the 7/17 x 20 TPI, small diameter 16,5 mm, ball size is 7,7 mm.

I am also in the Velocette Owners Club. I have just looked at their spares list and they do not stock cup and cone bearings. I think you will have to find someone who can make them as a one off for you.

Hi Laurie and Ian,

I’m also Velocette Owners Club member. I checked the groves and they have the cups for the steering head, so at least this. I thought it could be possible to get the cups and cones, as it’s webb front hub, but seems like no way. I’m going to remake it for the standard bearings, so just have to order the 7/16 x 20 tpi die to make a new axis. I think this will be easier and cheaper way, and I’ll keep original parts in a box with the leftover bits.

Hello Martin
I have successfully ‘reground’ steering head bearings by fitting new balls to a pair of races and adding fine grinding paste and spinning. When the rumbling noise stops you are done. I used a lathe because I have one but a drill press with appropriate fittings should work as well.
I did not use the balls used for grinding in the steering head, but fitted a new set. I have used the grinding balls again to regrind another set of races.
