Can anyone advise me of the correct model speedometer for the Lucas equipped B’ham Scott i.e. fitted externally rather than let flush into the headlamp. The speedometer that I have is a “Smiths Chronometric S.608/19” and is of the latter type which has a bezel designed for flush fitting and has no studs for fitting to a bracket on the top yolk.
I think the 85mph one is “S433/L or S433/1/L” depending on whether it has a trip or not.
120mph is “S608/3”
I have had all these fitted to various Scotts with out-rigger drives.
My present one on my Brum is a refurbished 120mph (that’s optimism for you!) but it doesn’t have a number on the dial.
It should be possible to buy a new correct rim and shell or buy a second hand shell or duff speedo at an auto jumble and use the parts from that.
My speedo (a 120mph version) seems to work although I’ve not checked its accuracy. I’ve now located sources for a new bezel & mounting bracket (costing more than the speedo did originally I think!) I’ll have to drill the back for the mounting studs but otherwise as far as I can tell the only visible difference will be that the trip knob protudes from the back of the instrument rather than the side. I think that it will be a case of some black paint & take it from there.
For information, I’ve just noticed in the “Bits & Bobs” section of this website that there is a copy of a brochure produced by the factory giving details of a kit of parts to “modernise your Scott”. This includes the outrigger driven speedometer drive used on post war Scotts and includes the following information:- “only suitable for Smith’s speedometer heads, types S491/1/L for 21 tooth final drive sprocket and S433/1/L or M115 for 19 tooth final drive sprocket”. Incidentally, the whole kit which included Dowty forks, new front wheel, speedo drive & front mudguard cost £38 ten shillings!
Looking at my speedo, it has the proper trip reset , and it fits in the headlight but has the numbers 1550 SC3303/01 ( looks like a Royal Enfield app) .It seems that it is not correct. I can have the speedo rebuilt with the numbers SC3309/00 on a new faceplate is this right? What should it look like, any photos? Otherwise I could look for a correct one , I know good luck with that 😕
