I have finally had a look in my 1960 rear wheel at that groove in the bearing retainer ring and like you there is nothing there ! Sorry to ruin the suspense ! I am certain that the wheel is as it left the factory so maybe it’s simply an artefact of manufacture or designed in but found unneccessary. Perhaps Geoff case might know.

Thanks for the information Charlie. I would have sworn black and blue that there would have been a graphited rope seal in the groove. KP
