Brum Speedo

Does anyone know which Smiths speedo was fitted to the Birmingham Scott. ie the numbers printed on the dial face?

Presumably the same as a late Shipley Scott ? —They both have the same drive off the outrigger and both have 19″ back wheels/ 21T final drive sprocket, but I don’t know if the rear sprocket on a Brum has the same number of teeth as a Shipley/Enfield rear sprocket. If someone can confirm I can soon have a look at a late Shipley speedo and get the type number.

Brum and late Shipley Scotts have the same size rear sprockets.

Hi Dave, The one you require is a S433M. I am told that a S433B/EX or a S434B/EX, will also have the correct internal gearing and be graduated to 85mph. I don’t know if all three mentioned will have a ‘Trip’ recorder and/or a bulb-holder for night use. Hope this helps.

Hi, I’ve just had another look thru’ my bits and pieces, and can now confirm that an S433 I/L is a bit more specific to your needs as they definitely have an internal light. Perhaps that is what I/L stands for !!

The speedo info I have collected on the Brum Scott, 120 mph, S433/3/L, S467/3/L. My Brum, SC3309/00.It should have the trip cable through the BOTTOM ,(many are through the side) The cable needs to be 6″long to pass through the headlamp. The chrome bezzle is the stepped (later type) ,not rounded,(pre war? ) Many other numbered Smiths Cronometric 120 MPH speedos will do the job. If you want it light it will need a bulb holder with a 3watt sbc cap ,fitted in the bottom!

My Brum is 1957 and has Lucas electrics and thus has the speedo separate from the headlight, not inset, and therefore would have the trip reset on the side although it would be possible to use one with bottom mount reset cable.

And for Brian, I don’t think I/L stand for internal light as I have an 85 mph speedo with the number S433/9/N which is fitted with an internal light!
Does anyone know what all these numbers and suffixes mean? Mine also has the number 1600 above the S433/9/N which I believe is the number of cable rotations per mile.

ahh, You have an early Brum ,with late Shipley Lucas stuff fitted. Only a few Birmingham.Scotts are so equipt, mainly 1956 bikes. 85 mph speedo could well be correct, Regards Geoff.
