Although I’m not sure about the mag, nor the actual manual that you’re after, there is a good article on Amals here.

I’ll post you a copy of an original “Hints and Tips” manual on the Amal 276 carburetter, it’s a bit tatty, but it will tell you all you need to know.
We have three Amal suppliers in the UK.

Nice bike, I have similar, but mine continually “spits back” through the carb. Ken Lack tells me that it’s important to fix the float bowl at the front of the carb, not where you (and I) have it, at the rear.

Hi Gary.
The BT-H MO2 is not a motorcycle magneto, and info’ is thin on the ground. They were made during the 1939-45 war for use by the Royal Air Force as an auxiliary mag for starting recalcitrant aircraft engines. They are of good quality but would not originally have had provision for advance and retard or threaded mounting holes in the baseplate. Up to about 20 years ago they were sold off in unused condition at government surplus sales. Someone has got hold of one and grafted-on an advance and retard mechanism. To all intents and purposes it can now be the same as an MC2, and the usual magneto specialists should be able to help if the sparks are weak, especially U.K. traders who will have the spares and knowledge.

Hi again Gary.
Your Amal carb is considerably later than 1927, but is probably a much better carb for your Scott than a Two-jet Binks or an AMAC.
I would be looking for a 170 main jet, a number 6 needle, and a number 3 slide. Also make sure that there is NO discernible looseness in the fit of the slide in the body. Try having the needle in the middle mounting groove for a start, and as regards the pilot air screw, screw it fully in and then unscrew one and a half turns. Unscrew the throttle stop screw until is not touching the bottom of the slide for initial setting up tests.
To start, turn on oil and petrol (gas to you!), then flood carb until fuel squirts out of the float chamber breather hole. Give two gentle kicks on the kickstart lever with the throttle closed to suck some mixture into the engine. Then open throttle about one quarter and give a firm but not violent kick on the kickstart lever. It SHOULD in theory now be running!!
When running immediately check that oil is flowing.
I hope this helps but if you still have problems let me know.

Brian, Richard, Dean…thank you so much for the information and wonderful links. so, an BTH MC2 would be the correct mag, what would the correct carb be for the ’27 flying squirrel?
thanks,
gary
Hi Gary.
The correct mag. would NOT be a BT-H MC2, but the one you have should be perfectly OK unless you are a perfectionist, in which case you should look for a BT-H M2-G2. These have a horseshoe shape magnet and alloy plates to close off the open sides of the magnet. Those plates have the BT-H logo pressed into them.
Not all Super Squirrels had the M2-G2 from new, as bikes ordered with an electric lighting set would have had either a Lucas, BT-H, or occasionally a Bosch combined magneto/dynamo unit.
The factory had cashflow problems for decades and would fit electrical equipment from whichever manufacturer would give them credit!
Over the years magnetos from Dixie, Fellowes, EIC,Lucas,BT-H,Bosch, etc., all were fitted. As Bosch had a factory in New York at one time you might be able to find a Bosch ZA-2 more easily, and they are VERY nice mags.

Hi Gary,
On my 498cc 2 Speed Sports squirrel I have an Amal fitted. I use a
170 Main Jet
6/3 Slide
106 Needle Jet.
I set my ignition to the points just opening on full advance at 5/16″ BTDC
