<p style=”text-align: left;”>Hi, new member. I am going to view a 47 Squirrel. It’s been laid up for four years and is part of an estate. The seller is not sure if it was a runner. I’m an experience re builder/ restorer usually working with basket cases BUT I’m new to Scott’s. Can you advise of particular issues I need to be aware of and especially if there are any red flags that would mean I should walk away? Thanks on advance.</p>
You should be aware that post war Shipley bikes are not fetching much money at the moment. There are several 1947-49 bikes advertised in the forthcoming June Yowl, if you’re unsure about this one.
Your biggest potential worry will be the state of the bottom end on an unknown engine especially if you don’t know why it was laid up, You can inspect the big ends with covers removed and that should give you some clues to the state of the engine especially if it turns over with compression. However, the potentially expensive problems come from the main bearing crankcase cups which are a specialist job to replace. The front forks were originally air suspended and will likely have sunk unless replaced by springs. My personal recommendation would be go for a running machine while the market is depressed. Of course, if the bike is cheap then maybe worth the risk?
Good luck!

Hi Thanks for that. In the circumstances of a viewing can I get to the covers easily? Is it just play on the big ends I’m testing for? Restoration / rebuilding is what I’m about, this is a bike to be on the road next Summer so I don’t want to buy someone else’s restored runner. From what I can see from pics the bike is complete apart from no lights, what sort of a price is reasonable? Thanks again.
Price is always hard. Good condition late Flyers seem to go for about £7k. Projects needing lots of work for nearer £3k. The crankshaft doors are held on by clamps though late Flyers also have the oil pump (left) and distributor/generator on the right which does complicate things a little. Play and blueing due to heat should be obvious. Where are you based? There may be a local Scott owner that could go with you?
Good luck!
Keith
Thanks again, base in East Yorkshire, HU181NQ
My 1947 bike may be available, I no longer seem to have the leg to start the bugger. Not really a renovation project though
