Looking back in the Yowl as far as 2004 there appears to be a number of mentions of a double cam lift clutch mechanisms but no pictures, has any one got any please I could do with doing two clutches.since the last lot or surgery it has left me rather weak in the arms and legs.Thats the main reason I have gone to electric start. thanks eric
Hi Eric,
This type of mechanism has indeed been around for a long time. It dramatically reduces the force required to lift the clutch as it makes use of the reaction force of the cable outer that is lost on the gearbox case in the standard mechanism. I produce the mechanism shown below, this is to a design drawn up by Roger Moss. He has used this on his racer for many years.
It is not a direct fit, as there are some small modifications required to the back of the case, requiring the case to be out of the bike. The standard bronze quick thread release is very prone to wear, being open to any road grit. This improved type overcomes that problem also.

Thanks Eddie, looks a very nice piece of work but expensieve just to make the clutch lighter. eric
From memory, this idea goes back donkey’s years to a Scott racer called Derek Whittle, and I had my first close look at it in the paddock at Cadwell Park in the late 1970s. If you have a trawl through ‘Technicalities’ there was a DIY article explaining how to make one, printed in Yowl. At a guess early to mid 1980s ?

Just to put it in to perspective try and have something of this quality designed and manufactured, I have one and it is well made and would be a challange to reverse engineer, I am just thankful there are people like Eddie prepared to help us keep the wheels rolling. 😀
Andy, It was clear to me that Eric was thinking that Eddie’s version would be out of his price range, and so I thought that the Derek Whittle DIY version would be the answer for him, and anybody else in a similar predicament. As he has fitted electric start to his bike I thought that he would be able to make the Derek Whittle item as well.

Thanks Brian, you are correct in thinking it would be out of my price range, after I retierd as a motor mechanic I retraind as a universal miling machine operator and also learned how to use a lathe, so I do know the time and effort Eddie puts into making theses things.its just the fact when you are nearly 80 you have not got the extra spare money to spend on small items when you need bigger items.that are going to cost a lot more. Has any one got the Yowl with this article in, unfortunately when I was diagnosed as having cancer some years ago I got Kevin to clear all of my motoring stuff out,of course that included all my back copies of the Yowl. all I have got now only go back to 2004. thanks Eric
I have now got the article by Derek Whittle plus a modified drawing by Clive Buckett. cant see any reason why I cant make two one for my 29 special and one for my B/ham special. eric
