Crancase Lug Weld Repair

[Deleted User]

Can anyone recommend a top class aluminium welder who might repair the front lugs on late Scott cases please?

Hi,
Ive successfully welded two crankcases myself using TIG welding process, but i must warn that its not without risk due to:

1) The aluminium quality can be variable,
2) Porosity in the aluminium, and
3)Contamination with oil,

Each of the above factors makes the task challenging and i think that you’ll struggle to find a welder who will accept the associated risks due to the potential destruction of the crankcase, that was what i found and is why i tooled up to do it myself.

If you would like me to have a look at yours send me some photos and i’ll take a look and advise,

Feel free to PM me or post your email address.

Regards

Please also be aware that once welded inevitable distortion will have compromised the alignment of the cups.
In particular the gland faces may become out of square making operation ineffective.

Thanks Eddie & Scotty H for your helpful replies.

The repair in question is to a front lug on a late engine fitted to a frame where the rails have been removed for racing…

In the intervening period we have managed to find a welder of pedigree to effect a repair, but Scotty’s offer to take a look is very much appreciated

Thanks again
