In the post-war years Don was the Chief Metallurgist at AMC (AJS, Matchless, etc.), with a substantial input into the development of the AJS 7R, Matchless G50, and AJS Porcupine racers. He occasionally submitted technical articles to various ‘classic’ magazines, and of course to Yowl. He also told me once that he had a major interest in an American company that manufactured batteries. Because of environmental objections, with concerns over possible lead, mercury, and cadmium pollution, they were prevented from opening a proposed new factory. As a consequence the new factory was built in China, where of course they were welcomed with open arms. No wonder nearly everything is made in China, and the US and the UK have almost completely lost our old manufacturing industries….
