Just noticed a late Shipley engine (DPY 5531) for sale on ebay The No is 180857526114. The starting price is £750.
The seller says that it is 1947/8, but with that number I think it is a 1950 motor, so probably does NOT have a magneto drive sprocket on the flywheel. Worth checking before you bid……

Just out of interest, knowing that with such a high engine number it is in fact a post-motorcycle production unit, left on the shelf at Shipley in 1950, I have asked the seller if it has one or two sprockets on the flywheel, and as I expected it has only the one on the L/H side, so it is unsuitable for a magneto ignition bike without a change of flywheel.

Just in case it’s of any interest to anyone my engine No. DPY 5103 (with matching frame number) was first registered in March 1950, it has a magneto sprocket.
I have had a look in my birmingham scott records and can find bikes fitted with engines either side of the one for sale,(DPY 5531). It may have been in a bike, but usually the head would be the “square type”,not the rounded (Shipley) type on this engine. It is most likely a leftover from the old scott stuff bought by Matt Holder. Some years ago i bought one of these new(old stock)engines for my brum.,it too had a “Shipley”head. Just popped out the garage to check the number
Auction has ended, Eight bidders, sold for £955. Pretty good price i would say,yes/no?!! regards Geoff.

Hi, my 1949 is engine No.DPY 5315 WITH THE ORIGINAL LOG BOOK, I would think yours has probabley had a different crank case fitted. I have also got DPY5555 which I believe is the last engine built at Shipley. Ted.

I think it’s kosher, I’ve got the old VE60 and the engine & frame numbers agree with that.
‘Bout the only two things about the whole heap that are mark you! 😉 ❗
