Hi, I went to the VMCC library today and spotted an interesting entry in the last Shipley despatch book. There is a ‘block’ entry which says that Messrs Burrows and Kitchen [successors to Scott], built engines DPY5430 to DPY5559, and supplied them to Aerco Jigs and Tools Ltd. [Matt Holder]. They also supplied gearboxes 4550 to 4679. Whether or not they were actually made by Burrows and Kitchen, or were simply stock left on the shelf is another matter……

Hi,
I used to own DPY 5434, BigKev’s bike and broke the crankshaft. I went to see Tom Ward at Derby and he told me that Harry Langman had built the engine so unless he worked for Messrs Burrows and Kitchen, some of the engines DPY5430 to DPY5559 at least were stock left on the shelf.
Regards,
Bob Mather.
Hi Brian, It would be interesting to know the date these engines and gear boxes were supplied ,as untll now i assumed they were leftovers from Shipley.
Hi Geoff, I neglected to make a note of the date, so that will have to wait until I next visit, or another member has a look. Somewhere I have original copies of the various letters sent to dealers announcing the liquidation, and at least one of the letterheads is overprinted with the Burrows and Kitchen names. I also have some paperwork showing different addresses for them in the Shipley area where they were keeping a 1928 works TT Scott and sidecar, or at least an outfit carrying the numberplates of one…. It had been continually taxed by the works for many years, including throughout the war, so it was probably the works hack, or a means of getting extra petrol coupons. If they also squirreled (!) away a load of engines and gearboxes before the liquidators moved in maybe Matt Holder didn’t know when he bought the company, and so bought them in a separate deal later from Burrows and Kitchen ? All a bit murky I suspect, and typical of the asset stripping that goes on when many companies go bust. Further research required !

My 1957 Brum left the works on July 2nd. The engine number DPY 5479 and gearbox number 4567 CM fall about 1/3 of the way through the range of numbers given by Brian.

My Flyer which is registered 1949 has engine No. DPY 5179 and gearbox No. 4297 CM. I had beleived it was one the last ones to come out of the Shipley works, But as my engine number is 251 engines before the start of the batch you mention perhaps there were a lot more produced after mine.
Does anyone know approx how many they made in that last year at Shipley ?
Mark
Mine has DPY5446 and 4569CM, supposedly 1957
Hi Fred, Your engine and gearbox numbers seem to fit in nicely with the ‘surplus’ Shipley batch.

Brian
