EASTERN SECTION DECEMBER MEETING

Hello all. Our Eastern Section December meeting is at 10am on Sunday Dec 11th, at our new venue The Buttercross, which is in the Market Square, Bingham, Notts.. Last month we clashed with the Remembrance Day meeting and parade in Bingham, and with hundreds of participants and spectators, parking places were hard to find ! I hope that it will be nice and quiet this time… The pub (Wetherspoons) opens at 8am, so there will be plenty of time before the meeting starts to have a nice leisurely “Full English”, or perhaps just a bacon roll…. Of course, being a Wetherspoons means that their full menu is available all day. I have booked the Snug again, which is the room at the bottom of the staircase. As usual all are welcome.

As part of my duties as a local councillor, I heard today that a company called Adkam Homes has applied for a “Certificate of Lawfulness” in respect of “The Haven in the Vale Hotel”, our Eastern Section venue for many years until three months ago, and also where the club held a couple of AGMs. So, it looks as if homes are going to be built on the site. National Grid power lines cross the grounds, and it is highly unlikely that homes could be built under them or in close proximity, and I therefore think that they could only be built on the ‘footprint’ of the existing building, so there is little or no hope that it will survive or reopen in the future. The end of an era, and a fate that has befallen so many of our old pubs in recent years…

I can find out very little about Adkam Homes, except that they are based in Nottingham, and provide “Supported Housing for vulnerable people”. It may perhaps therefore be some sort of a conversion of the existing building into a hostel. We will see…
