Fitting 3 speed kickstart spring

Can anyone tell me the easiest way of fitting a new spring?
I have tried various ways of compressing it but dont want to go any further for risk of damageing the spring.

Dan,

Place the spring onto the centrepin and with a pair of pliers (grip firmly) wind the spring up and when wound up set the outer end on the anchor pin .

Replace the cover an hey presto !
