I need a pair of rear foot pegs for my 1947 Shipley Scott or a drawing or pattern to make them to. If anyone can help it would be appreciated.
In hope

Good afternoon Steve,
Not sure I fully understand what you want. If you are wanting foot rests for a pillion passenger, the hole in the frame is threaded to take an 18mm spark plug body as a basis.
Thanks David
Yes it is the pillion rests that I am looking for.
Thanks for the tip on the thread is there a taper leading into the threaded bit too? Would you know what diameter and length they are please?
I would really like some old second hand ones complete with rubber on if possible in keeping with the rest of the bike but if I can gather enough info to make some I will give it a go. We have some Scotts in the local VMCC branch but none of them have pillion rests to copy.
Thanks
Steve
Steve,
To save time, I have looked up your email address, to send you photos.
If they do not arrive, email me – my address is in Yowl “Section Information”
Old footrest rubbers may be perished. The VMCC do a range of new, which can be “scruffied up” should you wish.
I may have some Steve. Give me a day to check.
Dave
My ’48 has pillion footpegs though I don’t know if they are original or not. I will be happy to provide dimensions/photos etc if it will help.
Keith
That would be the perfect solution Dave, please let me know.
Steve
Thanks Keith
If Dave cannot find any original ones I will get back to you. David Waring has sent me some photos of some very good home made ones but if yours are original that would be helpful.
Steve
Hi Steve
Sorry, but none of my footrest have the requisite 18mm threaded attachments.
Dave
Hang on a mo’ chaps ! The 18mm threaded holes in the rear lugs are NOT for pillion footrests. They are for fitting a sidecar, and are much too far back for a pillion passenger, whose legs will be bent back at an acute angle, very uncomfortable and causing cramp. Pillion rests should be about halfway along the lower chainstays of the frame. Lycett used to make adjustable clamp fitting ones. Not very elegant but functional. If you go on eBay, and into ‘Vintage motorcycle parts’ you will find two or three pairs available. (I just checked !)

My 1949 Scott has pillion footrests fitted to these 18mm holes and I have never had anyone complain. My wife and I travelled thousands of miles on it since I bought it in 1982, she was only 5 feet tall though. I once gave Dave Thomas a lift home to Birmingham when his bike let him down he must be 6ft. My son has been on it quite a few times and he is 6ft. plus and big build, and few more mates as well. When I first bought it I purchased a pillion seat from Armours and also a pair of rests with 3/8 BSCY thread studs these are still available at auto jumbles. I had a pair of 18mm bushes made with 3/8 BSCY female threads in the tool room and they have been on ever since. Ted.
Ergonomics principles say that for extended periods sitting down the angle between upper leg and lower leg should not be less than about 90 degrees….
My mother used to be so comfortable on the back of Dad’s Ariel that she would fall asleep ! It worried him so much that he would fasten a length of rope around the two of them.

Thanks all for your input. I have sourced the foot pegs below and will attach these to the 18mm plug thread suggested by Dave.
