Dear all, the restoration of my 29 flyer is going well, all totally stripped and off for plating, spraying, wheel building, engine repairs etc. so should start the rebuild when all returns home. can anyone advise on the brake/cable/rod connection to the front brake arm, I have web forks fitted, but all missing from the brake lever down. the arm itself has not got a hole in it for a pin or a cable? it has a largish semi circular cut away where the cable or rod should go? any ideas? what are the thoughts on levers inverted or ‘normal’? on a 29 flyer I have seen both? regards john
I fitted inverted to my 29 Flyer, used Pete’s Bikes for stainless versions but maybe Scottparts has similar on new website?
Jiri Horice in the Czech Republic sells very nice inverted levers that seem to be identical (!!) to those sold by Pete Rosenthal, but considerably cheaper, even including the postage.
In 1929 inverted levers were fitted, right up to 1934. The front brake cable goes through the handlebars at first, and then emerges down to the fork cross member, into a 7/16″ Cycle Thread adjuster, then a rod down to the lever on the brake plate. The actual fitting on that lever can vary, but the end of the lever is usually forked, and a trunnion fits into the fork. The rod goes through the trunnion and another adjuster (spring loaded), fits on the end of the rod. Johnsons Cables, in Banbury, can supply the rod/cable assembly.

I was quoted £1800 plus the dreaded from Vintage Radiators, don’t think they wanted the job.
But if you need a rad, do check the earlier thread about the two rads at the Bonhams sale — who knows?

Thanks for the lead on the rads, they are sadly they are different to mine. Mind you £650 sounds cheap.
The bigger radiator, with the slot down the middle, is as used on 1931 to 1933 single top downtube framed Flying Squirrels, with the slot to accept the top hose and avoid fouling the frame. It will however fit a duplex frame vintage Flyer, so don’t dismiss it out of hand…

Where did you get the quote from John, the best quote I had last year was near £1800 so I am saving up for a new one for £1200, £650 sounds very tempting to me?
