one of the suggestions that I (a new DPY owner) have had is to get my pilgrim pump modified so it is geared instead of a direct crank drive. Does anyone know who would be able to do this mod or if suitable ‘gearboxes’ ever come up for sale.
I would guess Roger M. could make such a thing but I know he is very busy at the moment.
The first question is to ask why you want to do this and if you can acheive the desired end result some other way. Although the pump gets a hard time and has been much maligned by some they seem to have done a reasonable service at engine speed for many a decade provided they are kept adjusted correctly, good oil is used and the oil is clean!
If your current Pilgrim is running okay there is a strong arguement to leave well alone. I run Pilgrims on all my Scotts and have never had an issue with any of them at engine speed, and I regularly go over 5000rpm. Just my thoughts of course.
I’m inclined to agree with Richard. I’ve had a Sturmey archer 3speed hub standing by for 3 years but the pump seems OK. Bear in mind that most Scotts these days only do a fraction of the mileage that they would have done originally and usually at more sympathetic speeds.
