Severe corrosion in that localized area is not uncommon, because we have two, (three if a Helicoil insert is also involved), different metals and water together, a perfect recipe for electrolytic corrosion, and that corrosion may well have removed enough metal from the fittings to make measuring threads a bit tricky !

Hi thanks, the old and new taps are different threads, hence my problem, the new one is supposed to be 1/8″ BSP but won’t scew into the adapter more than a turn a two then gets “stuck” so I’ve presumed the old tap isn’t 1/8″ BSP, so I haven’t tried to force it. The old tap and adapter thread isn’t corroded (or is the thread into the cylinder), the tap handle broke while trying to open it. Perhaps the following photo will make things clearer…

On the left is the adapter that fits into the cylinder (which is okay), next is the old broken tap, next is the new tap. The new tap won’t fit into the adapter, so I either need an alternate tap that will fit the adapter, or an alternate adapter that the new tap will fit and that has the same thread as the old adapter to fit into the cylinder. The trouble is I’m not sure what any of the threads are, and I guess my measuring skills aren’t very accurate, so all suggestions welcome !
A lot of these new taps are made in India or China, and without wishing to offend either the makers or the sellers, some of them are not very well made….. If you send me the adapter and the new tap, I can sort it out for you. Contact details all as listed in Yowl under Section Information.

To avoid breaking the lever off a stuck tap, the way to open it is to free the taper by tapping on the BOTTOM end of the spindle with a small hammer. There is a small Thackeray washer under the retaining nut, which allows for the clout on the bottom to raise the taper on the operating lever off its taper seat in the body of the tap. Once freed, you can put a drop of oil into the taper which should keep it free for a year or two…. This is a darn sight easier than trying to get a rusty split-pin out for a complete dismantling.

Hi Russell, I received your tap and adapter this morning. The new drain tap is spot on at 1/8″ BSP, and it is the thread in the adapter that was a bit ‘fat’. I have therefore put a 1/8″ BSP plug tap down it, and the tap and adapter now screw together nicely. I have already posted it back to you.
