I have come to the bottom of my 2007 LS crank batch and the total to date is that over 100 sets of high strength Scott cranks have been made since 1997, with total success. I am currently getting prices for another batch, to see how much I must take from my pension fund to finance them.
I am sure that all costs for steel, machining, engraving, heat treatment, grinding, surface treatment etc will have increased. If anyone has a medium term interest in having a set of high strength cranks you can rely on, then I offer a price of £600 per set against a 50% deposit.
As I need to pay a lump sum heat treatment charge of approximately £1400 for the special process, then I ask if anybody wishes to have either Short Stroke cranks or Super Head Stems. As the same steel is used, these items can be processed through using the same heat treatment processes.
I am considering making a few short stroke cranks for stock, but bearing in mind that the initial batch of short stroke cranks took 5 years to sell, I would have to apply a significant premium to cover these slower moving items.
Again for the SS cranks, I offer a price of £600 per set if a 50% down payment with order is received. Delivery would be approximately 6 months from start of manufacture.
In case there are prized machines with other cranks types and the owner is interested in ensuring the safety of the engine, then please contact.
I do not want to be considered a prophet of doom. The record of crank failures speaks for itself and is manifested in the rarity of having a frame and engine number pairing as left the factory. The life of overhung cranks as made by the factory, is like our own lifespan. We hope that the end will be much delayed in it’s coming, but come it inevitably will one day.
