This may be sacrilege to some but I think I would be safer and happier with indicators and mirrors on my 1934 Scott. I seem to have lost the owl like ability to turn my head through 360 degrees that 17 year olds on scooters take for granted!
Can anyone offer advice and sources of supply?
Thank you.
Having spent over three hours this May Day in a traffic jam resulting from a very serious accident involving a biker, (five police cars, three motorcycle cops, two ambulances, four fire engines and a helicopter air ambulance), I am more than ever ready to vote for anything that improves rider safety.
After all the principal object of owning these old machines is their preservation so anything that will aid that aim has my vote not to mention the safety of the rider.
My only caveat would be that any modern aids to safe riding should be fitted in such a way that their removal should leave no evidence behind.
The advent of super bright light emitting diodes should make the task easier so looking at them would be my first port of call.
The most image stable and neat, (at least to my eye), mirrors I’ve used were the type that plugs into the ends of the handlebars but that would depend a lot on the individual bike.
I’ve got a British made handlebar end mirror which works well and doesn’t spoil the look of the bike too much. The draw back is that they always seem to need modding to keep them tight and pointing in the right direction. A friend of mine has one which he claims vibrates down to just the correct angle to keep an easy check on the “light haze” from his exhaust pipe.
The fitting provided with a bar end mirror is not substantial enough to withstand vibration and wind pressure leverage. The best way to overcome this problem is to go to your local builder’s merchant or do-it-yourself store and buy what is called a “loose bolt Rawlplug”. These expand just like the bar end fitting but are cast metal and not a bit of bent tin! They come in various sizes and so you can fit them to a 7/8″ or 1″ bar.
The only mod you need to make to the mirror arm, is to open up the hole to take the metric bolt provided with the Rawlplug. These really grip within the handle-bar.

Never thought of that. What a good idea. Thanks.
I have fitted indicators to both of my 50’s Ariels and they work very well on 6v. Contact Paul Goff, he advertises in most Classic Bike magazines, he sells small indicator sets and miniture halogen bulbs which use very little current as a 10 watt bulb is as bright as a normal 21 watt bulb.
