Kick start travel

On my 1949 three speed gearbox kick start the pawl does not engage the cog until it is half way through it stroke. It appears that the slotted bush requires moving clockwise by about 45 degrees to place the slot in the correct position to obtain a full effective stroke. This will require a strip down and a new locating slot to be cut into the bush flange.
Has anyone ever experienced this problem before?

My 1949 three speed gearbox is the same. It engages when the lever is about 5 to 10 degrees above horizontal. I think this is how they are. If the motor is even just barely OK it will still start.

If the bush is still located properly it must be the case that the pawl has worn or broken off, a new item can be purchased from Scottparts

My kick starter pawl sticks up but releases with a minor turn of the 13/16″ ? brass? boss.
Having read the threads re the pawl I cannot undo this retaining component to inspect.
Help please.
