Just fault finding on my Lucas MD2.
I’m running it on the bench at quite low revs ( 400 rpm ish !!) It gives a good blue spark initially but dies after about 20 seconds, same on both plugs. If I wait a short period , minute or so it will again give a blue spark and die again after another 20 seconds.
Haven’t got my multi meter with me at the moment any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Having just finished my mag which is working very well you may well find the condenser is breaking down. I would think it unlikely to be the primary or secondary coil, but possible, it could even be a crack in the slip ring or just a build up of carbon inside the housing from the earth brush and pickups. I used Brightspark for spares, they also have a good fault finding page and are very helpful. Depends if your a have a go yourself or send it away for refurb guy. I take it you’ve already checked the points etc and the spring arm is well away from contacting the points body or case. Kev
Depends on skill level, you have to remove the armature applying keepers to the magnets and then either get it replaced or carry out a little wiring and fit an Easycap under the points, all info required on their website. Kev
To paraphrase the old saying, a good mag = bliss, but a poor mag is just bl**dy purgatory. Unless there’s documented evidence of a recent pro mag rebuild, I always factor in the costs of a mag rebuild in the same way as new tyres tubes and brake shoes are factored in.
For a hundred quid or so, I have peace of mind to know it’ll still be going long after me…
