luggage carrier

Hello, just thinking to make luggage carrier for my Flying squirrel. Is here someone who could make me a technical drawing of late 20’s carrier please? I was more versions at the photographs, I think this depends at the supplier of the factory or even some could be “home made”? Would be nice to have correct factory type, if possible.

Hi Martin, I am about to make some of these carriers the only problem is that some people have 20″ wheels and some people have 19″ wheels also so many different mudguards and the way they are fitted, clearance etc. I think the only sensible thing to do is to allow the owner to drill the fixing bolt hole himself so that it sits level above the mudguard. Is there any other members out there who would be interested in one of these carriers? Alan Noakes. scottworkshop@hotmail.co.uk

The one in the bottom photo (and the bike !) was my 1927 long wheel base Flying Squirrel, and it had a 21″ back wheel, yet still had plenty of mudguard clearance. It was bought from the Spares Scheme. The top photo shows the slightly earlier carrier with straight rear members, but these were replaced by ones like ‘mine’ with the dog-leg bend in the rear members, which allowed the fitting of rectangular leather-fronted toolboxes direct to the carrier instead of to the mudguard stays, as per the middle photo. Somewhere I have a dimensioned drawing done by John Underhill, and if I can find it I can supply copies. I may also have a drawing of the veteran type rear carrier. On really early bikes the carrier was part of the frame, and not detachable. Glyn Chambers had one or two batches of carriers made for the Spares Scheme, so he may also have drawings.

I bought a luggage carrier from the spares scheme many years ago, but never used it and am intending to sell it.
I took it to a recent Abbotsholme Gathering, where Glyn Chambers recognised it as “one of his”.
It looks like the one in the lower photo in the earlier posting.
The main (vertical) leg is 14½inches tall (hole centre to top face of carrier) and 14 inches tall (hole centre to underside of cross tube).
The space between the flat faces of the bottom ends of the vertical legs is 8¼ inches.
Hole centre bottom of vertical leg to hole centre of the leg sloping forwards is 11 inches.
The tube sizes are half inch and one inch.

Brian, I think the drawings would be the best option, the post cost would be quite high and carrier is not that difficult to make here. Even I can buy 1/2″ tubes here. Please let me know if you find it. Thanks a lot,
