Can anyone suggest a source of supply for the metalastic bushes as fitted to the Brum shock absorbers (metal bush with rubber bonded to it)? Many years ago I got the bushes to replace the ones at the top, but seem to recall the wider ones used at the bottom were out of stock or not available. Not even sure where I got them from now, and since I have no reciept, suspect someone else got them for me.
Finally have a place to start assembling my Brum, and got the bits out of store and discovered I never got the lower bushes put in. Not that there is any danger of it suddenly getting finished, but I thought I would start hanging some bits on it so I could at least wheel the frame around the garage. So for the moment I put in some plastic bushes just to prop things up while I hang the wheels on.
Just as a refresher, the lower metalastic bushings pass a 3/8 bolt and would be one inch long to fit in the swing arm. The outer diameter would be nominally 7/8, though the shock absorber eye is a little smaller in diameter, not a problem since the bush is encapsulated in rubber.
The lower bushes were seized with rust to the swing arm when I went to take it apart all those years ago. The upper ones are narrower, and I suppose if the proper ones are not available, I could use more of those with washers either side to shim, though it would place more stress on the bolt. Unfortunately I did not get any extra of the upper metalastic bushes either!

I’ve just done a quick UK only “Google” and a lot of possibles came up. I did not visit any of the sites but it should be worth looking for at least enough time to get a numb bum!
When you think what the function of a metalastic bush is it should not be too difficult to make a “home brewed” version. Metalastic bushes are a very neat cost effective solution but then they have the factory with all the gear.
If all else fails there is always Devocn, yes I know the stuff costs something near to highway robbery but if it solves the problem…
I had not thought of trying Google for something like that. But the only Google hits I could get for Metalastic bush were for car suspensions kits.
But I did find them available stateside from DomiRacer. They have an on-line store via their website, http://www.domiracer.com and the part numbers for Metalastic bushes for Girling motorcycle suspension units that might be of interest to Scott Birmingham riders are:
#19-64533645 3/8 bolt, 0.940 wide
#19-64533652 3/8 bolt, 0.880 wide
#19-64533658 3/8 bolt, 0.750 wide
They list for $US7-8 each depending on size. They do have sizes for other bolt diameters too.
They just retail stuff, so someone out there is making them but I do not know who.
Cheers,
Doug
