Hi chaps, whilst adjusting the primary on the Scott, before doing the same on the Silk, and thinking of all the problems lubricating that bit of the drivetrain, got me thinking: has anyone designed and made a belt primary drive for the motor?
It seems to me, having now used them in many bikes that they would be:
strong
able to be run dry and clean
quiet
no maintenance
virtually invisible
able to absorb a lot of transmission lash.
Has anyone tried this? Should we consider clubbing together to pay Roger Moss to develop such a system, keeping our great bikes reliably on the road?
Any thoughts?

Quick reply..
I have thought about this in the past, discussed it with Roger back then and did some research.
In my opinion the main problem is the width of the belt. With only space for a very narrow belt on the drive side of the flywheel you would have to have a very narrow but strong belt. I have checked with several belt makers but those are hard to find (for the horepower and rpm needed). Most belt conversions (Norton, Thriumph etc.) use rather beefy belts and rims!
Especially if you would like to use a self tracking belt (like the eagle pd from goodyear) to avoid the use of flanges (that take away even more space from the actual belt width). The one that came most near was offered to me at 700 euro’s… Well, I do like some experimenting but this simpy was to much!
So, for me I will stuck with my beltconverion for driving the magneto or dynamo and a chain for the primary.
But, maybe others think otherwise! And maybe Roger has done some more thinking on this in between.
Cheers,
Erik
that’s interesting Erik, I might have known that you’d be onto it! I wonder if it’s worth talking to Tony Haywood, I might give him a call, what sort of width do we have to play with?

Hi, Paul, I was always adjusting the primary chain on my 1949 scott and it was wearing them out about every thousand miles. It gets so hot in between the crankcase that the lube just got flung off. Then I started using Castrol Chain wax and have’nt had to touch it for over two thousand miles it stands high temperatures and stays on the chain. Best wishes Ted.
I started to write a response but realised that I needed to expand the text to get a complete picture of primary drive dynamics. I also needed to write a piece for the next newsletter, so I sent the text to Graham Parker to include in the next newsletter, which I gather is quite near to completion.
Unfortunately the time I can afford to spend not doing productive work is limited, so please be patient.
If anyone is not receiving the newsletter and wishes to do so, just send a request to Graham Parker (Fellow SOC member) at

Kindest Regards
