I’m pleased to have had my own ’49 Flying Squirrel running at speed for the first time in maybe three decades, now road registered in Victoria. I made it a whole 7 miles before, sadly, the engine quit whilst doing a tad over 100km/h! A momentary lock-up of the rear before clutch in and a coast to stop.
here’s the situation and I’d like some thoughts on what to look at next.
There was plenty of fuel. Oil was running fine in the pilgrim and there was smoke, so I’m not thinking any kind of seizure. On trying to restart later in the day, compression seems fine, the kickstart and pistons are running freely. I suspected electrical issues (I’ve had a couple) but the plugs are sparking nicely. The bike did give some kickbacks and sounded like it wanted to start, but no luck. The distributor was checked and points were clean. The plugs weren’t fouled either.
Any ideas out there on what I should look at next? The only thing noted was spark plugs being different heat ratings and some ‘play’ in the distributor (may need re-bushing).
I’d be grateful to hear… I was having way too much fun riding to let it sit for long not running! It sounded terrific too.
