I think you may be right. He was referring to his carb, and I went with that flow without noting that he then mentioned the word ‘block’ ! 🙄
Ether “eggs” takes one back, such useful little blighters!
Used to get mine from a BT bloke that worked in “Anchor” in Brum.
Worked well in air rifles I dimly recall —- 😈
Oh yes, I would put a .22 pellet into the loading tap of my Webley and SCOTT Mark 3 air rifle, and follow it up with a few drops of model diesel engine fuel, which was about one third ether. The gun would go off with a loud crack, and a flash out of the end of the barrel. The power seemed to be about doubled. Happy days in the early 1960s.
Sorry Brian i should have made it clear it is the Viton base ring that was damaged, regards Ry
Hi Brian ,,and all others who offered advice to me, I rebuilt engine but to no avail it would fire once once only , unfortunately while i kicked it over I managed to do damage to a total knee replacement I had some time ago so at moment i am taking it easy. Fortunately a member of the club who lives less than one mile from me came and tried to start it after several kicks and not starting he checked the gap in the points, reset them tried again no change, so again checked points the gap was not as he set them, after investigation we found some play in the spindle bushes, also on twisting the spindle it did not return fully to its original position, so its off to the doctor distributor who will not be able to refurbish it until mid November due to volume of work load. so I should be fully recovered by then and try starting again, if it does not then all advice will be welcome until then drive carefully happy scotting Roy
Has anyone up your way got a paddock starter that you could borrow? They’re very useful for starting recalcitrant Scotts. If you were a lot closer, you could have borrowed mine.

As a matter of some interest, there is a firm supplying new distributors for Austin Seven engines, which are similar to the Scott.
The name is Accu Spark of St Albans tel 01442 243 688 They may be able to help with spares or a new item. Worth a try …
They have a web site. Regards
The Lucas distributor is the DKX2A, centrifugal advance and retard, and the four-cylinder car version is DKX4 or DKX4A (The ‘A’ stands for anticlockwise. Many components will be interchangeable. Many car makers used them, even Ford, in the Model Y. They have a hard life on a Scott as of course they have to turn at engine speed, instead of the half engine speed on four-stroke engines.
Even if the centrifugal advance and retard is not working properly, it shouldn’t stop the engine from running. Is the distributor condenser/capacitor ok and not shorting out? Also how about the coil? I’ve had one that allowed the engine to fire up but not keep running.
