On board 1928 TT2 across the North Yorks Moors

Here is an on board video I shot a couple of weeks ago while testing camera mounts for on board footage. It shows the run from Kildale to Ryedale (Hutton Le Hole) which is one of my favourite for wide open views and very little traffic. Unfortunately the camera mic seems to have picked up the mag chain more than the engine note. That chain is now in the bin and a hollow pin fitted.

Excellent Richard, most enjoyable. Also good that you gave a view of the bike at the finish; must have raised the tone of the BSA run no end !
As an aside, it worries me how few of the riders wore high visibility bibs/sashes.

It was the wandering sheep that I noticed! They always worry me where there are no walls or fences to restrain them. An old friend of mine ran into one at speed, and he went over the handlebars, ending up with permanent brain damage. It’s cost him his job, marriage, home, and ruined his life in many ways as his whole personality was badly affected. Many years ago I ran over a cat, and it ended up very dead, jamming the back wheel of my Velocette Venom Clubman. Fortunately I managed to stay safely on board as I skidded to a stop. Unpredictable things, animals loose on the road.

I’ve clipped the nose of a sheep before when it decided a kamikaze dash was in order but nothing more. it is car drivers and horses that worry me more, both are more unpredictable than sheep…. Most roads across the moors and dales have unfenced sheep but natural selection seems to have seen that most stay put when you ride past. The key is to look out for ones facing into the road as they will bolt into the road if spooked.

Now I HAVE had an encounter with a horse…..In our village there was a racing stable owned and run by a man with the unlikely name of Chuck Spares. I kid you not. At one time, into the mid-1980s, he was quite successful, and had a lot of horses being trained and raced. Willy Carson’s son was one of his apprentice jockeys. Now racehorses are, for want of a better word, even more “feisty” than your average horse, and totally unpredictable when being exercised on the local roads. One day I drove very slowly past young Carson Junior and his steed, when for no good reason it bucked and reared up, and then lashed out at my van with both its back legs, putting a deep double hoof print into the driver’s door. About twelve inches higher and its hooves would have come through the glass and into me. The village heaved a collective sigh of relief when Chuck closed down the Stables, as it was only a matter of time before someone was injured or killed by one of his horses. The local vicar had a horse come partly thru’ the windscreen of his car, putting him in hospital for several weeks. It wasn’t one of Chuck’s horses though….

Sometimes my favourite pastime is sitting in the pub listening to stories other tell while staying quiet. Every now and again you happen upon a story where the teller does not realise the person he is talking about is in his audience. Last Wednesday at the weekly BSA club pub meet such an occurence took place when one member was regailing a story of the weekend previous and the run. He had joined late in the run and had to head off early. On the way back near Scaling Dam a bloke on “some old black bike with these skinny tyres and race numbers” shot past him and he could not keep up on his A65. Part way through the story he paused then said he was actually embarrased about this and was not sure if he should continue telling for fear of mocking by his peers 😆 One of the other guys there twigged it was me and goaded said embarased party some more and sure enough it was TT2. After much ribbing I confessed it was me but I’m not sure he will live down being smoked by a bike 40 years older than his. It was on the way back from taking the video above, but sadly the camera had run out of memory by then so no footage to further rub it in. Don’t you just love Scotts (most of the time…)
