This is a note to all our overseas members and prospective members:
I am the Overseas Liaison Officer of the SOC and have received emails from a number of members wanting to pay the £16 membership by PayPal. I have therefore set up a PayPal account based on my email address so that non-UK residents can use it to join the SOC.
My email address is my full name, colinhough, which is at hotmail dot co dot uk (my son tells me not to type in the email address as written as ‘searching’ software will pick it up and then download spam to it).
All the very best,
Colin
That’s perfect Colin! Yet another thing that makes life a lot easier for us on the other side of the Channel!

All,
Since my first post I have had 5 membership renewals and am learning about how PayPal works. If you have a PayPal account and transfer money from it then the fee comes straight through. However, if you pay the fee via a credit or debit card then there is a transaction fee of just under £1 (I was confused as the first two credit card payments – actually before my post – did not have this deducted, but PayPal only allow this twice a year before they charge).
I therefore propose that anyone paying by credit/debit card pay a fee of £17 to cover the transaction costs. I hope this is OK for you.
All the best,
Colin
Colin, and again the money is on it’s way.
For other overseas members: try to use paypal also. It’s quite easy.
Happy Scottin !

Thank you Colin ! I will use this service next year !

All overseas members,
As per Fred’s note, we have set up PayPal to be paid via via my email address or the spares scheme which Gill currently runs (so members can send over a spares payment and membership fee in one go) – both options only applying to overseas members.
What we find with PayPal is that they take 5.125% off of the payment however it is done. Therefore, to get £16 into the club, the actual payment needs to be £16.87. I understand that a 87p charge is a lot better than any other options.
We have been asked about using a bank-to-bank direct debit (as I understand that you Europeans in the Euro zone can do between all the countries) but this is not possible into the UK i.e. from a Euro to a pound account.
As I assume all that read this are computer literate so can use a PayPal account, the option of posting cash over is not really an option. However, if anyone wants to try posting either Euros or US dollars, I will convert to Pounds at that day’s exchange rate and forwward it to the treasurer with email confirmation to the sender as I travel in the Euro zone and the US on business regularly so these currancies are OK for me.
All the best,
Colin
Hello everybody!
I have been reading the post and I would like to say that I already made a transference to the IBAN code account through which I had paid the previous years. I have written to the Secretary to inform him as I didnt know (or maybe I have forgotten) we had our own officer (so great!). Anyway, it is always nice to hear that you are looking for new ways to make it easier to the overseas member.
Kind regards and see you at Abbotsholme!!

I am pleased to welcome you as a new Club member.
You can join using Pay pal, the subscription is £19.00 at the moment. This includes Pay pal’s commission charge.
Just use Colin’s (coded!) e mail address as listed in the first entry on this subject.
For the future, the committee agreed on Saturday to open it’s own Pp account activated from a link on the web site. This will be for membership subscriptions, binders and spares scheme contributions only – ’till we see how it goes!
